The overture to Weber’s grand opera Euryanthe has the same memorable melodies, colourful orchestration, and striking harmony we know from his more famous overtures to Der Freischütz and Oberon; it’s a real mini drama in music.

As an adolescent, Mozart was as capable a violinist as he was a pianist. His early concerto, which we know he played himself, is a miracle of charm and delight. The warmth and richness of the musical tradition Mozart and Weber exemplify knows no better exemplar than Brahms’ glorious symphony; it has a glowing mellowness that never fails to charm and delight.
